Assistant Surgeon William Alexander White served with the 47th Regiment throughout the Eastern Campaign of 1854 – 1855. He was at the Battles of Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman and the siege and fall of Sebastopol including the sortie of 24 October. He received the medal with three clasps and the Turkish Medal.

Malta 20 Nov 1853 Arrived from England. Stationed at Cottonera.

Malta 10 Apr 1854 Left for Turkey and the Crimea on board the transport Apollo.
Was present at the Battles of Alma, Inkerman, Balaklava, and the siege and fall of Sebastopol, and the sortie on 24 October.

Malta 19 Sep 1856 Arrived from England.

Malta 25 May 1857 Left for Gibraltar.

22 June 1860 Staff Assistant Surgeon.

1860 – 1862 Served in London.

1862 On duty in Chatham.

1863 On duty in Bengal.

5 May 1863 Staff Surgeon.

8 Jan 1864 Surgeon 11 Royal Artillery.

1869 – 1873 Served in Bengal.

23 June 1869 Staff Surgeon from 6 Royal Artillery.

1873 – 1875 On duty in Netley.

18 Oct 1873 Surgeon-Major.

15 Sep 1875 Placed on half-pay.

16 Sep 1876 Recalled from half-pay and served in Dublin.

1876 – 1879 On duty in Dublin.

20 Oct 1879 Retired on half-pay with honorary rank of Deputy Surgeon General.

29 Dec 1880 Died at his residence at Dunean Terrace Edinburgh.
