No 157 Surgeon Major Usher Williamson Evans LRCS (Ire 1844) MD (Glasg 1844)

Surgeon Major Usher Williamson Evans took the diploma of LRCS Ireland in 1844 and the degree of MD Glasgow in the following year. He entered the Army Medical Department in April 1846.
Staff Surgeon U W Evans served as a volunteer, his regiment the 16th Lancers being at home, from the commencement of the war with Russia until promoted in December 1854. He was present at the Battles of Alma, Balaklava, Inkerman and served in the trenches before Sebastopol. He received the Crimea medal with four clasps and the Turkish Medal.
Surgeon Major Usher Williamson Evans retired on 3 May 1871 with the honorary rank of Deputy Surgeon General.
He died at Clifton on 27 August 1912, aged 89 years.
3 Apr 1846 Gazetted Assistant Surgeon 16th Light Dragoons, vice Assistant Surgeon John Edward Stephens who moved to 10th Light Dragoons.
8 Dec 1854 Promoted Staff Surgeon of the 2nd Class from 16th Light Dragoons.
1855 Served in the Crimean War; present at the Battles of Alma, Inkerman, Balaclava, and the Siege of Sebastopol.
1855 To Portsmouth from Turkey.
1856 – 1859 On duty in Corfu.
24 May 1859 Appointed Surgeon 2nd/15th (York, East Riding) Regiment of Foot. The subsequent vacancy on the Staff was filled by Surgeon James Crerar.
Malta 20 July 1859 Arrived from Corfu.
Malta 1860 On duty with his regiment.
Malta 12 Jan 1861 PMO Malta reported that he was
A most attentive officer, hospital in excellent order, records well kept.
Malta 20 May 1861 Left for England.
6 Sep 1861 Promoted Staff Surgeon from 15th Foot vice Surgeon Major Joseph Ambrose Lawson who retired on half-pay.
1862 On duty at Buttevant, County Cork.
29 July 1862 Surgeon 61st (South Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot.
3 Apr 1866 Surgeon-Major 61st Foot.
8 Feb 1868 Staff Surgeon.
1868 – 1869 On duty in Bermuda.
1870 On duty in the Curragh.
1871 On duty in Dublin.
3 May 1871 Retired to half-pay with the honorary Rank of Deputy Inspector General.
