In July 1978, British Forces Broadcasting Services Malta fell a casualty to the dispute between the Malta Government and the British media. Mintoff ordered BFBS Malta to stop transmitting on 21 July 1978. This was in breach of the Anglo-Maltese defence agreement. Transmissions resumed on 12 Oct 1978, following the lifting of the ban on BBC journalists after the resolution of the discord.

Rear Admiral O N A Cecil was the last Commander British Forces Malta. In 1978, there were 1,200 servicemen, most belonging to the Royal Air Force. The troops became non-operational on 1 Oct 1978, and gradually withdrew by the end of Mar 1979.
