On 1 May 1976, the Royal Malta Artillery ceased to exist, and was replaced by the Armed Forces of Malta.

General Elections
Malta went to the polls on 17 Sept 1976. The Labour Party was re-elected for another five years. Dom Mintoff obtained a majority of three seats over the Nationalist Party led by Dr George Borg Olivier.
