Captain Percy (?Philip) Edmond Ralph Byrom Unwin was educated at St Thomas Hospital, London from where he qualified MRCS LRCP in 1938. On 30 June 1938, he applied for a Short Service Commission in the Royal Army Medical Corps.
He entered the RAM College Millbank on 1 November 1938 and joined the RAMC Depôt on 2 January 1939. He had no recorded hospital appointments before being commissioned.

6 Apr 1939 Embarked for Malta.
24 Oct 1940 Rejoined General Hospital Mtarfa for duty.
Apr 1940 Medical Officer in charge ADS Tarxien. On 10 October 1940, Captain B C Jennings took over command of ADS Tarxien from Captain P E R B Unwin who left for Mtarfa General Hospital on 23 October 1940 after completing his handover.
