20 Aug 1844 Entered the Army Medical Department without purchase aged 25 years and 5 months an Assistant Surgeon 2nd West India Regiment. Posted to Chatham up to 28 Sep 1844.

29 Sep 1844 – 21 May 1847 On duty on the West Coast of Africa.

22 May 1847 – 9 Mar 1855 On duty in the East Indies.

12 Oct 1847 Married Frances Anne Walbank at St Saviour's Church Jersey.

17 Mar 1848 Appointed Assistant Surgeon 53rd (Shropshire) Regiment of Foot.

22 July 1848 Birth of Edith Plantagenet, baptised at St Peter's Church Calcutta.

14 Dec 1851 Appointed Assistant Surgeon 9th Lancers, vice Assistant Surgeon Eneas Mackintosh Macpherson, promoted Surgeon 59th Foot. The vacancy left in 53rd Foot was filled by Assistant Surgeon Alexander Macrae.

10 Nov 1854 Promoted Surgeon 12th (The Prince of Wales's Royal) Lancers vice Surgeon George Northon Foaker, who died in Madras on 28 July 1854. The vacancy in 9th Lancers was filled on 9 Feb 1855 by the promotion of Assistant Surgeon Christopher Bakewell Bassano 70th Foot.

9 Mar 1855 – 23 June 1855 Served in the Crimean War with the 12th Lancers. Was present at the siege and fall of Sebastopol. Received the Crimea Medal (1855) and the Turkish Medal (1859).

24 June 1855 – 2 June 1858 On duty in England.

26 Sep 1855 Birth of Fanny Chichester, baptised at St Paul's Church Chichester.

28 Dec 1855 Appointed Staff Surgeon of the 2nd Class.

3 June 1858 – 22 June 1862 Served in Canada.

21 Nov 1862 Surgeon 2nd/17th (Leicestershire) Regiment of Foot by exchange with Surgeon James Edmund Clutterbuck.

23 Dec 1862 – 27 Oct 1865 Served in Halifax Nova Scotia.

20 Aug 1864 Promoted Surgeon Major 2nd/17th Foot through length of service.

28 Oct 1865 – 29 Nov 1865 At Jamaica West Indies.

30 Nov 1865 Posted to Halifax Nova Scotia.

8 Dec 1869 Appointed Staff Surgeon.

15 June 1872 Arrived in Malta from England.

24 July 1872 Deputy Surgeon-General Army Medical Department.

7 Feb 1873 Left Malta for Bengal.

4 Mar 1879 Retired on half-pay with Honorary Rank of Surgeon-General.
