31 Mar 1862 Staff Assistant Surgeon.

17 Nov 1863 Assistant Surgeon 107th Bengal Infantry Regiment.

On 17 November 1863, two assistant surgeons were appointed to infantry regiments numbered 101st to 109th inclusive. Fourteen Staff Assistant Surgeons out of the 16 who had obtained commissions in 1862 were promoted assistant surgeons.

These were: John Barlow Hannah and William Pile (101st 1st/Royal Munster Fusiliers), William James Tyrrell and Gough Ashton (102nd 1st/Royal Dublin Fusiliers), John Edward Fannin and Richard Hall (103rd 2nd/Royal Dublin Fusiliers), Emil Becher and Thomas Parker Smith (104th 2nd/Royal Munster Fusiliers), Thomas Ceil Morgan and John Langdon (105th 2nd/Yorkshire Light Infantry), Samuel Flood and William Folliott (106th 2nd/Durham Light Infantry), John Ross Murray and John Dustan (107th 2nd/Royal Sussex), Thomas Dodd Milburn and Ignatius McDonogh O’Farrell (108th 2nd/Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers), Alexander Ferrier Churchill and Nicol Carter (109th 2nd/Leinster).

7 Aug 1866 Staff Assistant Surgeon.

23 Oct 1867 Assistant Surgeon Royal Canadian Rifle Regiment.

29 May 1869 Staff Assistant Surgeon.

Malta 18 June 1870 Arrived from Gibraltar.

Malta 1 Aug 1870 On duty at Valletta and at Pembroke Camp.

Malta 1 Jan 1871 In charge of the women and children at Pembroke Camp.

Malta May–Dec 1871 On duty at Citta Vecchia.

Malta 14 Sep 1871 Staff Assistant Surgeon John Dustan, elder son of W Dustan Esq of Oaklands St Saviour Jersey, married Mary Ann Elizabeth at Trinity Church Valletta. The bride was the only daughter of the Reverend M A Hartnell MA of Tresco Island, Isle of Scilly.

Malta 20 May 1873 In England on leave.

Malta 7 Sept 1873 Returned from leave.

Malta 1874 On garrison duty.

Malta 29 May 1875 Returned to England on completion of five years foreign service.

28 Apr 1876 Surgeon Major.

Malta 15 Apr 1880 Arrived at Malta.

Malta 10 July 1881 Returned to England.

1 Apr 1882 Retired with the honorary rank of Brigade Surgeon.
