Assistant Surgeon Philip Giffard Martel was born in Guernsey in 1832. He was a student at Elizabeth College Guernsey and studied medicine at King's College London (Leathes Prizeman for 1853). In 1854, he embarked for the Crimea but died of fever. He was buried at sea near Sebastopol. A stained glass window was dedicated to his memory in St Martin's Church, Guernsey, Channel Islands.
