Assistant Surgeon Philip Giffard Martel
17 Apr 1832 [Guernsey]– 11 Sept 1854 [Crimea]

Assistant Surgeon Philip Giffard Martel was born in Guernsey in 1832. He was a student at Elizabeth College Guernsey and studied medicine at King's College London (Leathes Prizeman for 1853). In 1854, he embarked for the Crimea but died of fever. He was buried at sea near Sebastopol. A stained glass window was dedicated to his memory in St Martin's Church, Guernsey, Channel Islands.

24 Feb 1854 Appointed Assistant Surgeon 50th (The Queen's Own) Regiment of Foot.

Malta 1854 Arrived at Malta.

Malta 9 Apr 1854 Left for the Crimea on board the transport Hope.

11 Sept 1854 Died on board the transport Tyrone off the Crimea.
