14 Jan 1881 Awarded the Albert Medal of the Second Class by HM the Queen for the heroic zeal and humanity displayed by him in risking his own life in an operation upon Lt Graham 2nd/10th Regiment whereby that officer's life was prolonged by 23 hours.

22 Mar 1881–4 Apr 1881 Served at the Cape of Good Hope.

3 Feb 1890 Surgeon-Major.

3 Feb 1898 Surgeon-Lieutenant Colonel.

1899–1901 Served in South Africa.
Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 16 Apr 1901).
Was granted the local rank of Colonel whilst in charge of the General Hospital in South Africa 1901.

20 Nov 1903 Placed on temporary half-pay on account of ill health.
