From 1873, the four orphans of Richard Robert Dowse had been supported by grants (£30) from the Army Medical Officers Benevolent Fund together with the McGrigor Pension of £10. By 1883, only one daughter, aged 41 years and with no income and depending on the charity of friend, was supported. Up to 1903, the family had received £635 in aid. In 1904, the fund granted her a further £15.1
