Malta 4 May 1805 Acted as Assistant Surgeon Grantham Richard Townshend's second in the fatal duel with Lt W. Fairtlough 27th Regiment, when on 25 May 1805, the assistant surgeon was killed in a duel at Porte de Bombes Floriana.
Grantham in a statement written before his death affirmed that on 22 May he had been struck in the face by Mr Fairtlough, "and he could never think of receiving a verbal apology for such an insult. That there was one mode of settling the business that he had made up his mind to, and was determined to settle it in that manner." Lt William Fairtlough, appeared before a Court Martial on 30 May 1805 charged with wilful homicide, but was acquitted.1
