Service Record — Joseph Burke

10 Jan 1840 Commissioned Staff Assistant Surgeon vice Staff Assistant Surgeon John Sinclair, promoted Assistant Surgeon 39th (Dorsetshire) Regiment, vice Assistant Surgeon Robert Martin Davis, who died at Madras on 10 Oct 1839.

16 Feb 1841 Appointed Assistant Surgeon 50th (The Queen's Own) Regiment vice Assistant Surgeon Robert Ellson promoted Surgeon 90th Foot. The vacancy on the Staff was filled by Gentleman James Edmund Currey.

1845–1846 Served in the First Sikh War (Sutlej Campaign) with 50th Regiment. Was present at the Battles of Mudki (1845), Ferozeshah (1845), Aliwal (28 Jan 1846) and Sobraon (10 Feb 1846), for which he received a medal with three clasps.

22 Dec 1848 Surgeon 40th (2nd Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot.

12 Mar 1852 Surgeon 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot.

6 May 1853 Exchanged with Surgeon Richard Gamble 23rd (Royal Welsh Fusiliers) Regiment of Foot.

21 Oct 1853 Surgeon 3rd (East Kent – The Buffs) Regiment of Foot.

Malta 20 Nov 1853 Arrived at Malta.

Malta 11 Nov 1854 On duty at Fort Manoel, then left for Greece.

On 26th May 1854, the Greek Port of Piraeus was occupied by an Anglo-French force to prevent the Greek fleet from aiding Russia.

12 Nov 1854–23 Mar 1855 On duty in Greece.

Malta 24 Mar 1855 Returned from Greece.

14 Apr 1855 Left for Turkey and the Crimea. Served with the Buffs at the siege and fall of Sebastopol from 1 January 1855. Received the Crimea Medal with clasp and the Turkish Medal.

Malta 4 Dec 1856 Arrived from Queenstown.

Malta 1858 On duty as Surgeon 2nd/3rd (East Kent - The Buffs).

10 Jan 1860 Appointed Surgeon Major 3rd (East Kent – The Buffs) Regiment of Foot under the provision of the Royal Warrant of 01 Oct 1858. Took part in the China Campaign of 1860 including Sinho, Tangku and Taku Forts for which he received a medal with clasp.

17 July 1866 Exchanged with Staff Surgeon Major Edward Touch.

1866 Served in Calcutta.

26 June 1867 Retired with the honorary rank of Deputy Inspector General having completed 27 years service in full pay.

21 Nov 1870 At the Catholic Church Rathmines Dublin, Joseph Burke Esq DIG, son of J Burke MD of Butland Square, Dublin married Susan Fraser younger daughter of C R Fraser Frizelle Esq of Stapolin Co Dublin, widow of Thomas O'Brien MD Bengal Medical Service.
