Malta 14 Jan 1915 In medical charge of the Cyprus contingent of 550 officers and men from the 1st and 2nd/King's Own Malta Regiment of Militia which left Malta for garrison duty. The minimum rate of pay laid down for a major RAMC was issued to Surgeon Major Samut while serving in Cyprus. He was in charge of the Forest Military hospital at Limassol, which he directed with "conspicuous success".

Malta 24 Feb 1917 Surgeon-Major R. Samut, of the King's Own Malta Regiment of Militia, was brought to the notice of the Secretary of State for War for valuable services rendered in connection with the war.1 The Malta Government Gazette dated 30 Aug 1917 lists him as having been granted an honourable entry in his record of service in connection with the Maltese Labour Battalion at Mudros and Gallipoli.

1920 Wrote the music for an anthem for school children based on notes he had composed while a medical student at Edinburgh. To this music the Maltese National Poet, Dun Karm Psaila, wrote a hymn Din L'Art Helwa, (To this fair land), which was first played in public in 1923, and which was adopted as the Maltese National Anthem on Malta obtaining independence from Britain on 21 September 1964.

1920–1926 Professor of Pathology at the University of Malta.

Malta 31 December 1921 Relinquished his commission on disbandment of the regiment. Was granted the Hon rank of Lieutenant Colonel King's Own Malta Regiment of Militia.
