Introduction

Lieutenant Colonel Gilbert Wolridge Rose was the son of Dr George Rose of Aberdeen.

11 Aug 1914 Special Reserve Commission Lieutenant RAMC.

10 Apr 1915 Mobilised.

June 1915 - Feb 1916 Served on a hospital ship in the war of 1914-1918.

Mar - Aug 1916 Served in Mesopotamia.

10 Oct 1918 Promoted Captain RAMC.

Nov 1917 – 1919 Served in Mesopotamia.

1917–1919 RMO 13 Hussars.

7 May 1920 Awarded the Serbian Order of St Sava 5th Class.

1 May 1921 Permanent Regular Army Commission Temporary Captain RAMC.

10 Apr 1927 Major RAMC.

1924–1930 Served in Egypt.

1932–1937 Served in India.

Sept 1939 – May 1940 Served with the BEF in France.

9 Jan 1940 Acting Lieutenant Colonel RAMC.

11 Nov 1940 Appointed officer commanding 161st (East Anglian) Field Ambulance. He joined the unit at Corbridge Northumberland and took over command from Lt Col I M Pirrie MC RAMC who moved to 21 General Hospital, Hellingly Sussex. 161st Fld Amb embarked at Liverpool and Glasgow on 17 December. It reached Gibraltar on 30 December 1940.

16 Dec 1940 Embarked for Malta with 161 (EA) Fld Amb. The convoy stopped at Gibraltar and proceeded to Malta on 6 January 1941. On 10 January, it was attacked off Malta. No 7348929 Pte K A L Simper RAMC received severe head injuries (GSW), and died the same day. He was buried at sea. The convoy split, part proceeded to Malta; part went to Piraeus.

Malta 14 Jan 1941 9 officers and 154 other ranks of 161st (EA) Fld Amb disembarked at Malta.

Malta 17 Jan 1941 On 17 Jan 1941 Lt Col Rose G W, OC 161st (EA) Fld Amb, took over from Major Edwards G F as SMO Malta North and proceeded with the establishments of the medical units in his area. ADS Floriana was set up on 17 Jan; on 23 Jan, A Coy 161st (EA) Fld Amb set up ADS Zabbar, and work progressed to open ADS Zejtun. By 24 Jan, MAP Tarxien and Valletta were manned by 161st (EA) Fld Amb. MDS Hamrun and ADS Luqa became operational on 2 Apr and 7 Apr 1941 respectively.

Malta 1 Mar Promoted Lieutenant Colonel RAMC.

Malta 2 Apr Relocated from ADS Floriana to MDS Hamrun which was completed on 20 Mar 1941.

Malta 2 July 1941 Admitted to No 90 GH with dysentery.

Malta 1942 Officer commanding 161st (East Anglian) Field Ambulance RAMC.

Malta 17 Feb 1943 Repatriated by air to England. On 18 Feb Major K Murray Wood OC B Coy became Senior Medical Officer (South).

25 Mar–24 June 1943 Acting Colonel RAMC.

1943 Assistant Director of Medical Services HQ 77 Div.

1944 Assistant Director of Medical Services North West Europe.

1945–1946 Assistant Director of Medical Services HQ Lines of Communication Area India.

21 Apr 1946 Died on active service in India. Lies buried at Kirkee War Cemetery.
