Introduction

Lieutenant Henry Howden Johnston was educated at the University of Glasgow, from where he qualified MB ChB in 1937. He was House Surgeon at the Eye Department Western Infirmary, Glasgow from 10 October 1937 to 10 April 1938, and House Surgeon at Kilmarnock Infirmary from 1 April 1938 to 10 October 1938.

On 25 August 1938, he applied for a Short Service Commission in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He entered the RAM College Millbank on 1 November 1938 and joined the RAMC Depôt Crookham on 2 January 1939.
